Musical moonlight

I have been called "The Conductor" at times when people watch me wave my brush around while painting, this piece was done from memory and has a musical feel to it.

Standing in the light

While everyone around me was busy painting vistas and the ocean, I did this little tree painting because I liked the abstract shapes and the light on the hill behind the trees.

Moonlit Marina

Some of my favorite paintings have been started in low light conditions, I suppose that is because my judging self is temporarily turned off and I am operating mainly from my intuition. This piece was painted while waiting to embark on a weeks long journey to the Channel Islands to paint, fish and dive.

Love Shack

Took a drive in the back roads of Carpinteria this weekend looking for some mountain ranges to paint and found this sweet little house nestled along a hillside filled with avocado trees just across the street from the creek. The special part was a baby red fox laying about 10 feet from me the whole time. I kept looking over expecting him to be gone and there he was, curled up in the sunshine staring at me.

Fish and Flowers

It's always fun to play with a Pallet Knife, it really helps to loosen me up when I'm getting too serious, this still life was full of color and shapes, the challenge was NOT to paint everything I was seeing in front of me.

Shimmering waves

The light on the ocean has always been one of my favorite subjects. This moment was so special because I was the only person around perched half way down the cliff with plenty of time to settle in and witness these mirror effects. Thank God I'm a Cali-Boy!

Genie-us

It was one of those days at school when I just couldn't concentrate which made painting the model accurately virtually impossible. So, I wiped it off except for the face which looked more like Patrick Swayze than the beautiful model in front of me, I looked at what I had done and started laughing so hard that I had to leave the room to compose myself. Upon returning the other artists including the model were all laughing and when I looked at my panel I found that David had painted a Genie Lamp at the bottom of my smears to create this masterpiece. "Genie-us"  12x16 oil on panel
Note: This piece is not for sale as the model wants it for her collection.

Barnyard Sunrise

Getting up before the sunrise always seems like an adventure to me, I guess because I relate it to a fishing trip or getting a jump on a long drive ahead. But this morning had nothing to do with either of those things, it was a search for color transitions in the morning sky for me. You know they say time flies when you're having fun, it goes twice as fast when you're painting a sunrise!

Famous the Fish

Welcome to my blog! I'm a painter, art tutor working with people in the special needs community, avid fisherman and a father. I've been painting since I was a child and have really started to take this gift seriously since I moved to Santa Barbara in 2000, when, after a series of events led me to the realization that I could no longer live my life the way I was living it and I needed to go within for my answers. So, I started a  meditation practice and before long I had the overwhelming urge to paint! Every day! So here I am 10 years later, a little wiser and a little grayer! My goal here is to share some of the moments I have as an artist with you through the medium of oil paint. I hope you enjoy the ride, I know I will.

So, Famous the fish is my only pet, he has a great personality and we really enjoy his puppy like enthusiasm. He works part time as a figure painting model, in fact that's how Famous came into my life. A few months ago I showed up to my Masters Class to find a still life set up which consisted of  nothing but a goldfish in a plastic bag, I thought it was an odd thing to paint so I proceeded to work on other projects I had already started. I then found out that Famous was an orphan and brought him home in an ice bucket, he was not doing so well after not being fed anything but breadcrumbs for two days. But after some loving care he is doing just fine in his new home. Oh, how did he get the name "Famous" ? Well, when my teacher went to the pet store to purchase a goldfish for a model, he asked the store clerk if he could return the fish later that day, the clerk asked "why on earth would you want to do that?" And he said "I just want to paint him and make him famous!"
